Symposium - "How to cope with stress?"

Keynote speakers: Michaela Hau (Germany) & Karen Spencer (UK)

Exposure to a stressor results in a suite of physiological and behavioural coping mechanisms in an individual. A major pathway enabling effective behavioural and physiological reactions is the secretion of glucocorticoids via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA). Within and among individual variation in glucocorticoid release during and after a stressful event can have many causes, such as individual condition, personality, environmental, social and genetic factors. Further, behavioural adaptations can affect physiological processes and vice versa.

In this symposium we aim at discussing recent experimental and methodological approaches to investigate mechanisms mediating stress responses and their consequences, ranging from hormonal and metabolic changes, oxidative stress to an altered immunocompetence in different vertebrate species.
